It is a fact that cigarettes stink. And they do it badly. So badly that people who don’t smoke are really suffering when in the vicinity of smokers, or when they’re in a smoker’s home, or when they have a habitual smoker in their own home.

The sad fact is that smoking folks simply don’t understand that pains the non-smokers go through every time they come in contact with a true addict. I should know. I was one for several years until I quit for good. And only after quitting I understood why many of my non-smoking friends were weary of coming to my home and preferred to meet on neutral grounds. And needless to say, I’m now one of those non-smoker sufferers who carries their pain around with pride.

First of all why does tobacco have such a strong (and bad) smell? The main reason is due to actual smoking. When you do it, the smell practically clings to your body and doesn’t let go for many hours. There is something to be said about the mix of body chemistry and tobacco that causes the nasty odor to be around for such a long time.

Then you also have the second hand smoke which you are exposed to even if you’re a non-smoker as soon as you walk in a bar or any place that allows heavy tobacco use. You do inhale it and your skin pores reek of it for a long time. Just like garlic (however garlic is that much healthier!).

If your home reeks of this nasty smell after having over a few smoking friends, here are a few things you can do to remove the odor from your furniture and your surroundings.

  • Add a dash of vinegar and baking soda to your washing machine when you wash the clothes that reek. This will eliminate the smell right away.
  • If you have white fabrics, or those that do not get their colors removed easily, you can use bleach such as Clorox to wash the floors and upholstery. Don’t use too much of it though as it’s quite hard on the environment.
  • Use a good steam cleaner such as the LadyBug steam cleaner to clean your floors, carpets, upholstery, window coverings, garments and other fabrics that can take the heat of the steam to remove effectively any lingering odors. This is my favorite technique that truly does what is supposed to do.

The good thing about the steam cleaners is that they’re removing more than just various nasty smells.
