JD Jeffrey Dame is the artisanal niche brand by Jeffrey Dame, an independent scent entrepreneur based in Scottsdale, Arizona who has been involved in the perfume industry since the grand days of Estee Lauder and Caron, for whom he has worked in a previous capacity.
JD Singularity Woman, his latest fragrance, launching in summer 2021, follows JD Duality (which launched in 2018) with a different character, and yet at the same time its alter-ego, so to speak. Dame explained to me, “While I have created a handful of unisex perfumes in both my DAME Perfumery and JD JEFFREY DAME scents, my creative process is very much oriented around perfumes for a woman and separately perfumes for a man. In niche, this approach is rather old school, but this is the creative approach I am most comfortable with and my customers are welcome to cross over – which they often do. All the perfumes I create have my signature DNA throughout – exceptionally beautiful, completely finished and smooth…always easy to wear and ready for compliments. I strive to create fragrances which will be my customer’s favorite above all – the perfume they reach for when they are running out the door and instinctively reach for the scent they love best. A scent which brings a smile to their face. The fragrances within my DAME Perfumery collection are accessible and ready-to-wear, while my newer collection of scents in JD JEFFREY DAME Postmodern Perfume tend to step out a little and push toward the edges. Still highly wearable, but with a more specific direction.”
“JD SINGULARITY Woman is a very short and truly lovely formula blended with bergamot, orange flower, hyacinth, lilac, lily-of-the-valley, rose, jasmine, sandalwood, and musk,” explained Jeffrey, who collaborates with his perfumer Hugh Spencer of Spenarome.
The aim of the fragrance, according to the creators, was a very specific, focused and singular white floral scent formula. Here Dame was looking to have a woman smell the JD SINGULARITY Woman perfume and say to herself “Ahhh, this perfume is ‘just right’.”
Creating a “just right” white floral perfume is more difficult than it would appear, as the tendency for creative director and perfumer alike is to put more ingredients in, to fill the formula out, which leads to more complex florals. Here instead the aim was a “singular” white floral accord which speaks to the wearer. Putting in less instead of more, but still delivering a finished and full perfume to love and wear. The vision of wearable perfume is ingrained in the philosophy of Jeffrey Dame, forsaking creativity for creativity’s sake, as his experience in big brands such as Lauder and Caron has trained him to seek the beauty of wearing perfume instead of admiring it from afar.
The final formula is nine ingredients – no more, no less. Just nine. Bergamot, hyacinth, orange flower, lilac, lily-of-the-valley, rose, jasmine, sandalwood, and musk. Looking at the nine notes though, there are five big florals which are the signature of the composition: orange flower, lilac, lily-of-the-valley, rose, and jasmine. The two additional notes of bergamot and hyacinth are tiny strings tying together the five big florals. Underneath, to add complexity and serve as a pedestal base for the five florals to sit on, are the musk and sandalwood. Without the musk and sandalwood, the formula would just be a bunch of flowers. With the musk and sandalwood, it’s a complete fragrance. Each note with purpose; the result is a white floral done just right.
There is an odd exhilaration upon coming across something at once familiar, and yet different at the same time. The scent of JD SINGULARITY Woman recalls to me the bright and cheerful ambience of Mimosa Mixte, a previous creation in the Jeffrey Dame collection of wonders which I was lucky enough to own. The newer fragrance gives me the same halo of good will, optimism, and a spring in my step, which the older one did, as well. It’s also very luminous, in the sense that there is a blast of light, of optical intensity when first sprayed on, a quality that JD SINGULARITY Woman also shares with Mimosa Mixte, as well as a sense of soapy clean, but quite feminine all the same, quality to it.
I would be hard pressed to discern the given notes one by one; there is a craft into blending the various ingredients which defies the usual parsing of notes accustomed to online reviewers, and so I will refrain from noting how jasmine does this or lily-of-the-valley does that; it’s so much more. The blend in JD SINGULARITY Woman is so masterful that the wearer gets a very smooth impression the way viewers of pointillism get while seeing a painting by Georges Seurat: It’s composed of tiny dots up close inspecting it, but it projects as a vista of unified beauty from a little distance. It’s quite lovely, clean, feminine, lush, and approachable. It beckons you close, much like those paintings do.
The predominant note on my skin is the lilac effect, with a humongous light shining on it, which obliterates any hint of shades in the nuance of red-blue (the pigments composing lilac tonalities in art), rendering it startingly bright like the sun. It radiates a light in the neighborhood of yellow and white, and the elegant bottle with the yellow typeface over black sorta gives the game away.
The fragrance was previously conceived (indeed I got a sample of it almost 18 months ago) but held back. Dame explained to me, “The introduction of JD SINGULARITY Woman was originally planned for one year ago in the spring of 2020. Everything was ready to go – perfume manufactured, launch program ready, etc – but with the global pandemic, I put everything on hold for one year until now when we are just starting to peek out from under the covers a bit here in the United States. JD SINGULARITY Woman is such a happy, pretty, and smiling perfume it just seemed best to hold off until these sunny summer days of 2021. Over the past year, though, I have continued to send out samples to my DAME clientele and provide bottles for private sale to my customers…bootleg and under the table as one might say…so the JD SINGULARITY Woman perfume is indeed out and about in the world right now.”
